Modern Slavery in Bristol – awareness training for professionals

Modern Slavery in Bristol – awareness training for professionals

Modern slavery is an umbrella term encompassing slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking. Victims of modern slavery are unable to leave their situation of exploitation, controlled by threats, punishment, violence, coercion and deception. Slavery violates human rights, denying people of their right to life, freedom and security.

In the Baby L Serious Case Review, the Bristol Safeguarding Children Board identified an opportunity to promote the understanding Trafficking and Modern Slavery for professionals working with children across Bristol.

Are you confident that you would recognise Modern Slavery if you saw it happening?  Would you know how to respond to victims while keeping them safe? Modern slavery is happening today, often in plain sight. In January 2018 the UK saw the first successful prosecution involving children since the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 – this case was supported by Bristol based charity Unchosen.

Unchosen are offering free 2 hour workshops suitable for all professionals working in our city.  Participants will develop an awareness of what modern slavery might look like in their communities, as well as their working life, and what they can do about it.

This training is particularly recommended for all local authority employees as they have a statutory duty to take action when they identify victims of modern slavery and the workshop will explain this process.

Participants will develop an awareness of:

  • What modern slavery is and how it works (forced labour, criminal or sexual exploitation
  • The National Referral Mechanism, local authority employees statutory duties, and the role of First Responders
  • What to do when faced with a potential victim
  • Understanding local provision.
